What is the current state of your Desktop? Does it have Windows 10? If so does it load, is it activated, what build is it? So if you have a PC that is not working like the laptop you mentioned the options would be to buy a copy of Windows 10 although I would advise you to double check the laptop is compatible with Windows 10 before doing that.

You could contact the laptop manufacturer to get recovery disks to return it to the previous Windows Vista in this case I believe or you may have recovery disks for it. You could buy a copy of Windows 8 again checking it is compatible and install that. Then once installed and updated use the free upgrade option for Windows 8 to upgrade it to Windows 10 that could be potentially a little cheaper but more work to do.
