The playback menu is also nice, with full-motion thumbnails that provide file size, resolution, and stream information. Hands down. It will not turn itself on to record. It’s a neat unit and comes with with a decent selection of interface options – on a multipurpose connector with and array of HDMI, VGA, Composite and Component sockets. It comes with an HDMI cable and was easy to set and is pretty much plug and play. I have to say the quality of the mp4 video captures was very good, with strong colours, nice contrast and a consistently stable image and no glitching, that I could detect. As others have reported there were some occasional lip synch errors, but in my experience these were minimal, and fixable.

However, no matter what format or playback machine I was recording from the resulting mp4 files were always recorded in format at 30fps or 60fps. This meant that when the files were imported into my PAL 25fps video projects there was a lot of frame juddering due to the 30fps to 25fps mismatch. I cannot find any way at all to change the recording format to PAL at 25fps or 50fps – maybe it’s not possible on this unit. I can crop the videos to in FCPX but it’s an extra stage of processing that I shouldn’t need to do.

Unfortunately though not many users are going to have access to that kind of equipment. To be honest am still deciding whether to keep this unit or return it for a refund. The video quality is good but with some very obvious limitations and issues.

And it’s not even a question of “you get what you pay for” because this unit is not cheap compared to other similarly specified convertors.

What I then tried was routing the HDMI feed through a splitter before connecting the Cloner Box Pro to it, but that made no difference in sound levels.

It did, however, make it easier to connect the Cloner Box when needed. The system records Mp4 files in 2GB blocks: that’s roughly 30 minutes of recording at one go, and they do provide an update you can download and apply which makes the file recording continuous. In fact, I’ve found that the 2GB block is my preferred recording setting, since you often have to edit bits of the final copy and having the file in 2GB chunks makes it a very simple affair.

I set the box to record very simple: just press ‘record’ on the remote then press ‘stop’ when the recording has finished, then switch off the Cloner Box before you remove the memory stick. Some have warned that removing the memory stick before switching the box off can corrupt the files, but I haven’t tried that, so all the files I recorded were perfect.

I then download the files into Final Cut Pro X, which makes editing the bits you don’t want a doddle, and it also allows you to increase the playback volume to a hearable level. I then Export the edited file to Handbrake, where it’s compiled into an Mp4 file that will play straight from the Apple TV. It’s true the sound needs improving, but I suspect this company is only now starting to make inroads in the UK and it has to be said their Customer Service is probably the best I’ve ever experienced.

On balance, then, an effective device for recording from the HDMI output on devices which provide them, and a work in progress, since their outstanding customer service folk are prepared to try firmware upgrades to help individual customers. Had a very frustrating time, trying to get this thing to work – bug after bug presented itself, with very poor firmware and the net result being a whole day wasted!

I wasn’t filled with confidence, when the manufacturer emailed me even before I received the thing to say that, if the unit failed to start up and showed a black screen, I should follow the instructions as provided. The issues I had with my unit were too numerous to list but here is a general summary: Frame rate issues glitches every 30 seconds or so and extensive frame dropping during recording even at low bitrate setting Recording Hard drive worked sometimes, then not at others. Formatting the disk, so the unit would recognise it was a convoluted process and eventually the hard drive failed to record anything at all – even though files would play back through the unit.

File playback is not full screen, only in a small box Sticking navigation issues in the ‘s style interface I decide not to contact their support, as I was really annoyed that something that performed so poorly had cost so much money!!! As such, it was never going to be a keeper – so back it went!

Incidentally, I also recently found a whole host of really bad 1 star reviews for this product on Amazon. My recommendation would be to avoid this like the plague!
