The familiars were once legendary heroes, warriors or mythical characters in the history of mankind. Story mode where you play through each characters story. You will fight all other character in a fixed order that is different depending on the character you choose to play. Between fights the story is presented to you by text dialogs.

The last characters you will face are Gilgamesh or Tiger. Gilgamesh is the final boss and Tiger sort of a bonus or hidden boss character. If you win against Gilgamesh you have finished the game but if you loose and lets the count down counter run out you will face Tiger. Arcade mode is like story mode except that the text dialogs between fights have been removed. Versus CPU is just a single match against an optional computer controlled character.

Versus human is the same as versus CPU except you can fight against a human. Training mode, here you fight against an optional character that acts as a training dummy. The dummy can be set to act in different ways depending on what you wish to practice on. When you lose life the green bar will decrease and the red bar under it will become visible. Once you loose all you green life you will first be downed then the second time you will lose the match.

The red bar will slowly be regenerated to green if you not hit by an attack or is blocking an attack. When you block an attack your guard meter will decrease and once it reaches 0 you guard will break. When guard break happens you will be open to attacks for a period of time. Your Skill meter will increase when you are blocking an attack or hitting the enemy with an attack. Skill meter is used to perform supers or Nobel phantasms, once you have done a super or Nobel phantasms the meter will decrease.

Throws are unblock able and cannot be escaped. Some specials can be delayed by simply holding the attack button. Specials, supers and Noble phantasms are unique for each character.
